The Israeli-made Arrow-3 missile defense system is set to protect Europe, with development work having started in Germany. A German army official informed on Thursday that the initial operational capability is expected to be achieved by the end of this year, with full operational capability anticipated by 2030.
*Defence System Will Be Built at Three Locations*
Three bases have been selected for these Israeli-developed defense systems. The first base is located at Holzdorf airbase, about 75 kilometers south of the German capital on the border between the states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt.
*Features of Arrow-3 Air Defence System*
Germany purchased the Arrow-3 missile defense system from Israel to fill the gap in the country’s air defense capabilities. The Arrow-3 system is the most powerful and accurate missile air defense system of Israel. It is capable of intercepting and destroying incoming missiles at altitudes of over 100 kilometers, neutralizing threats outside the atmosphere before they reach their target. Additionally, the Arrow-3 is capable of shooting down ballistic missiles.
Germany previously lacked this capability. After the Cold War, the nation’s air defense systems were partially decommissioned and are currently undergoing reconstruction. In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany has backed the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI).
*Construction Timeline*
According to a spokesman for the German military’s procurement agency, construction at Holzdorf is expected to be completed by 2028. For the other two sites, documentation is being prepared, and construction planning is scheduled to begin in the next phase. No location has yet been determined for the southern bases.
