Former Australia pacer and ex-Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie has sparked a controversy by labeling Pakistan’s interim coach, Aaqib Javed, “a clown” for his remarks on frequent management changes in Pakistan cricket. Gillespie, who left his role abruptly last year, alleged that Javed undermined him and Gary Kirsten, accusing him of “campaigning” for the coaching position.
*Aaqib Javed’s Remarks on Management Instability*
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, where Pakistan introduced Salman Ali Agha as their new T20I captain, Javed lamented the lack of consistency in Pakistan cricket. He emphasized the need for stability across all levels, from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to the players, stating that frequent changes hinder the team’s performance.
“Since last year, look at how many captains, coaches, selectors, and board chairmen have changed,” Javed said. “This is never ideal for the team, and it impacts their performances.”
Javed also criticized players’ reluctance to participate in four-day domestic matches, which he said is vital for improving their skills for Tests and ODIs.

Taking note of Javed’s comments, Gillespie claimed that the former Pakistan pacer had been plotting to secure the coaching role for himself. “Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary [Kirsten] and me behind the scenes, campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown,” Gillespie told reporters.
*Pakistan’s Coaching Carousel*
Pakistan cricket has seen a revolving door of coaches in recent years. Following the 2023 ODI World Cup, Mickey Arthur was replaced by Mohammad Hafeez, who was dismissed before the T20 World Cup. Gary Kirsten, appointed alongside Gillespie, left without coaching an ODI due to disagreements over player selections. Gillespie was also dismissed less than a year into his tenure as the Test coach.
*Javed’s Critique of Player Development*
Javed further pointed to the declining standards of Pakistan’s fast bowlers, highlighting their inability to generate reverse swing—a once-signature skill—during the Champions Trophy. “I have spoken to Haris Rauf and Shaheen [Afridi] and urged them to work on their skillset,” he added.
As Pakistan grapples with coaching instability and inconsistent performances, the ongoing exchange between Gillespie and Javed highlights deeper structural challenges within the cricketing setup. The debate comes at a critical time for Pakistan, as they look to regain their footing on the international stage.
