Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Ministers for Inaction Over Murshidabad Violence, Calls for Ground-Level Engagement

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her dissatisfaction with state ministers and legislators over their handling of the recent communal violence in Murshidabad. During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Banerjee emphasized the importance of proactive ground-level engagement to prevent such incidents from escalating.

The violence, which erupted in Murshidabad’s Jangipur subdivision earlier this month, was triggered by protests against the newly enforced Waqf (Amendment) Act. The unrest claimed three lives and caused significant property damage, prompting intervention from security forces. Banerjee lamented that the situation could have been contained if Trinamool Congress (TMC) representatives had actively engaged with affected communities.

Addressing her ministers, Banerjee stated, “A people’s representative has no religion or class of their own. It is their duty to reach out to all people and stay by them throughout the year.” She also criticized certain MLAs for making irresponsible statements in recent months, which she believes contributed to the unrest.

Banerjee’s remarks come amid mounting criticism from opposition parties, including the BJP, CPI(M), and Congress, who have accused her government of inaction. The BJP has gone further, alleging that Hindus in Murshidabad are being displaced and demanding the Chief Minister’s resignation. In response, Banerjee has announced plans to visit the violence-hit areas in May, once normalcy is restored.

The Chief Minister has also attributed the violence to “outsiders” and vowed to expose their conspiracy. As the administration works to stabilize the situation, Banerjee continues to monitor developments closely.
