Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake: Death Toll Surpasses 1,600; India Sends Aid and Field Hospital

A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand on March 28, 2025, leaving over 1,600 people dead and more than 3,400 injured. The epicenter was located near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, causing widespread destruction across six regions, including Sagaing, Magway, and Bago. The quake was followed by strong aftershocks, further compounding the damage.

India has launched “Operation Brahma” to assist Myanmar in its recovery efforts. The operation includes the deployment of two naval ships, INS Satpura and INS Savitri, carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid. Additionally, a field hospital with 118 medical personnel has been dispatched to provide emergency care. The Indian government has also sent an 80-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team equipped with rescue tools and canine squads to aid search operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with Myanmar, stating, “India stands with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour.” Other nations, including Russia, South Korea, and the United Nations, have also pledged support, highlighting the international community’s commitment to addressing the crisis.

As rescue teams continue to search for survivors, the earthquake’s impact underscores the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian efforts to alleviate suffering and rebuild affected areas.
