Namita Thapar Addresses ‘Nepo-Kid’ Label, Says Success Requires Determination and Skill

Shark Tank India judge and Emcure Pharmaceuticals Executive Director Namita Thapar has responded to being labeled a ‘nepo-kid’ and ‘papa ki pari’, emphasizing that success in business requires determination and skill. In an exclusive interview, Thapar shared her perspective on second-generation entrepreneurs, highlighting their role in India’s economic growth.

Thapar’s Response to Nepotism Claims

Thapar acknowledged the stereotypes surrounding family-run businesses but pointed out that 87% of India’s GDP comes from family-owned enterprises. She explained that when she joined Emcure Pharmaceuticals, the company was valued at ₹500 crore, and under her leadership, it has grown to ₹8,000 crore.

“People don’t understand that the second and third generations also need an entrepreneurial mindset. While founders are fabulous, family businesses also play a crucial role. Sometimes, people don’t think through that—it’s just their ignorance, you just can’t help it,” she stated.

Success Beyond Labels

Thapar also highlighted her solo investments on Shark Tank India, noting that many of the brands she backed have achieved significant success post-show. She emphasized that hard work and strategic decision-making are key factors in business growth, regardless of family background.

Public Reaction

Her remarks have sparked discussions on nepotism vs. meritocracy, with supporters praising her business acumen and critics questioning the advantages of inherited wealth. Despite the debate, Thapar remains focused on mentoring entrepreneurs and expanding her business ventures.
