P Chidambaram Supports India-Pakistan Ceasefire, Calls War ‘Pitiless’

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has backed the Indian government’s decision to reach a ceasefire agreement with Pakistan, emphasizing that war is “pitiless” and must be avoided whenever possible.

Writing in the aftermath of India’s May 7 military strikes under Operation Sindoor, Chidambaram praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for opting for a calibrated military response rather than escalating the conflict into a full-scale war. He noted that India’s targeted strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK) were necessary and justified, but cautioned against assuming that the threat had been completely neutralized.

Congress Leaders Back Ceasefire Decision

Chidambaram’s remarks align with those of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who stated that India had delivered its intended message and that prolonging the conflict was never the goal. Tharoor emphasized that peace is necessary, adding that the circumstances of 1971 were vastly different from those of 2025.

Warnings Against Complacency

Despite supporting the ceasefire, Chidambaram warned that Pakistan’s military leadership and intelligence agencies remain a persistent threat. He highlighted that terrorist groups like The Resistance Front (TRF), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) may still regroup and pose future challenges to India’s security.

Future Outlook

While the ceasefire agreement marks a diplomatic breakthrough, concerns remain over Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining peace. Indian officials have reiterated their firm stance against terrorism, stating that any further violations will be met with strong retaliatory measures.
