Mumbai Indians’ star opener Rohit Sharma delivered a match-winning performance against Chennai Super Kings, scoring an unbeaten 76 off 45 balls to secure a dominant nine-wicket victory at the Wankhede Stadium. His stellar knock, featuring four boundaries and six sixes, earned him the Player of the Match award.
Following the game, Rohit expressed his emotions about the Mumbai Cricket Association’s decision to name a stand after him at the iconic venue. “It’s a huge honour. I used to come here as a kid and watch the games. We were not allowed to come inside the stadium at some stages. Having played all my cricket here, grown up playing at this ground, to have that big honour, it’s a very emotional moment. Whenever it happens, I don’t know how I am going to react,” he shared.
Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya praised Rohit’s performance, stating, “You don’t have to worry about Rohit’s form. When he comes good, the opposition will be out of the game. SKY (Suryakumar Yadav) complemented him well”. Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav built an unbroken 114-run partnership, ensuring Mumbai’s comfortable chase of 177 runs in just 15.4 overs.
With this victory, Mumbai Indians have climbed to sixth place on the points table, securing their third consecutive win. Rohit believes the team is hitting form at the right time, saying, “We are peaking at the right time, winning three on the trot. Winning back-to-back is important, we stand in a good position”.
The Wankhede Stadium tribute marks a significant milestone in Rohit’s illustrious career, as he continues to be a pivotal figure in Mumbai Indians’ success. His journey from being a young spectator at the stadium to having a stand named after him is a testament to his impact on Indian cricket.
