Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has penned a heartfelt tribute to Virat Kohli, following the latter’s retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025.
Taking to social media, Tendulkar recalled a deeply personal moment from 12 years ago, when Kohli offered to gift him a sacred thread from his late father during Tendulkar’s final Test match in November 2013.
“As you retire from Tests, I’m reminded of your thoughtful gesture 12 years ago, during my last Test. You offered to gift me a thread from your late father. It was something too personal for me to accept, but the gesture was heartwarming and has stayed with me ever since. While I may not have a thread to offer in return, please know that you carry my deepest admiration and very best wishes,” Tendulkar wrote.
He further praised Kohli’s remarkable Test career, highlighting his impact on Indian cricket beyond just runs.
“Your true legacy, Virat, lies in inspiring countless young cricketers to pick up the sport. What an incredible Test career you have had! You have given Indian cricket so much more than just runs – you have given it a new generation of passionate fans and players. Congratulations on a very special Test career,” Tendulkar added.
Kohli, who made his Test debut in 2011, played 123 matches, scoring 9,230 runs with 30 centuries at an average of 46.85. His leadership as India’s Test captain saw him secure 40 victories in 68 matches, making him the country’s most successful Test skipper.
With Kohli stepping away from the longest format, Indian cricket bids farewell to an era defined by aggression, consistency, and excellence. His retirement has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans, cricketers, and analysts, celebrating his unparalleled contribution to the sport.
