Screen Use in Bed Linked to 59% Higher Risk of Insomnia, Study Finds

A recent study conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health has revealed that using screens in bed significantly increases the risk of insomnia by 59%. The research, which surveyed over 45,000 young adults aged 18–28, highlights the adverse effects of screen use on sleep quality and duration.

The study found that screen use in bed reduces sleep time by an average of 24 minutes, primarily due to “time displacement,” where screen activities take up time that would otherwise be spent resting. Interestingly, the type of screen activity—whether social media, gaming, or watching movies—did not significantly impact the level of sleep disruption. Notifications, light exposure, and engaging content were identified as key factors contributing to delayed sleep onset and disturbed circadian rhythms.

Lead author Dr. Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland emphasized the importance of minimizing screen use before bedtime. “If you struggle with sleep and suspect that screen time may be a factor, try to reduce screen use in bed, ideally stopping at least 30–60 minutes before sleep,” she advised.

The findings underscore the growing prevalence of sleep problems among students and their implications for mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being. Experts recommend disabling notifications and adopting healthier bedtime routines to mitigate the impact of screen use on sleep.
