Shaktikanta Das Appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi

In a significant move, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as ‘Principal Secretary-2’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his selection, and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued the official order on Saturday, February 22.

This appointment marks the first time the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) will have two principal secretaries, with PK Mishra continuing to serve as the Principal Secretary since September 11, 2019. According to the official order, Das’s appointment will be “co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier”.

*Who Is Shaktikanta Das?*

Shaktikanta Das, a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1980 Tamil Nadu cadre, assumed the role of RBI Governor in December 2018 and retired last year. During his six-year tenure, he navigated several global economic challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Recognised for his leadership, Das was ranked among the world’s top three central bankers for two consecutive years by the US-based magazine Global Finance. In the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2024, he earned an esteemed ‘A+’ rating. In his final press conference, Das emphasised that restoring the inflation-growth balance remained the RBI’s foremost priority.

Das’s extensive experience in finance and policy, coupled with his distinguished service as RBI Governor, makes him a valuable addition to the PMO. His appointment is expected to bolster the Prime Minister’s Office’s expertise in financial management and policy implementation.
