Sivasagar Municipal Board Achieves Record Tax Collection in Holding Tax

The Sivasagar Municipal Board (SMB) in Assam has set a new benchmark in revenue generation by collecting over ₹5 crore in holding tax for the financial year 2024-2025. This achievement, announced by SMB Executive Officer Debabrata Sharma, comes just days before the fiscal year ends, marking a historic milestone in the board’s 106-year legacy.

The record-breaking collection is attributed to the Assam government’s emphasis on strengthening revenue generation under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The state government had directed local bodies, corporations, and municipalities to prioritize revenue collection, a directive that the SMB has successfully implemented.

Executive Officer Sharma credited the accomplishment to the dedication of the tax department employees and the relentless efforts of SMB Chairperson Mrinali Konwar, Vice-Chairperson Sanjib Bora, and other municipal members and staff. The SMB has also undertaken several developmental projects, including solid waste management, road and drain construction, street lighting, and the development of parks and eco-friendly spaces.

Despite this impressive achievement, citizens have raised concerns about the poor condition of footpaths in the town, which have led to accidents and injuries. Local residents have urged the municipal authorities to address these issues promptly to ensure public safety.

This milestone underscores the SMB’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and governance while addressing the challenges faced by the community.
