Suryakumar Yadav to Lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 Opener Against CSK

Mumbai Indians (MI) have announced Suryakumar Yadav as their captain for the opening match of IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on March 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The decision comes as regular skipper Hardik Pandya faces a one-match suspension due to repeated slow over-rate offences during IPL 2024.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) imposed the suspension after MI failed to maintain the required over rate in their final league match of IPL 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants. This marked Pandya’s third offence, resulting in a one-match ban and a 30% fine on his match fee.

Addressing the situation, Pandya expressed his disappointment but acknowledged the rules. “It is unfortunate, but the rules are there, and I have to go with the process,” he stated during MI’s pre-season press conference.

Suryakumar Yadav, who also serves as India’s T20 captain, will step in to lead MI. Known for his dynamic leadership, Suryakumar recently guided India to a 4-1 T20I series victory against England. However, he will be eager to improve his batting form, having scored just 38 runs in five innings during the series.

In addition to Pandya’s absence, MI will also miss ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is recovering from a back injury sustained earlier this year. MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed that Bumrah’s return remains uncertain, adding to the team’s challenges.

Despite these setbacks, MI aims to start their IPL 2025 campaign on a strong note under Suryakumar’s leadership. Pandya is expected to return for MI’s second match against Gujarat Titans on March 29.

Stay tuned for updates on this high-stakes clash and MI’s journey in IPL 2025.
