A political storm has erupted in Tripura after Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury made a controversial remark suggesting that “taller people are dumber,” which was widely interpreted as a jibe at former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
🗣️ Minister Ratan Lal Nath Demands Public Apology
Tripura’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath strongly condemned the statement, calling it “objectionable and derogatory”. At a press conference, Nath demanded a public apology from Chaudhury, stating:
“The LoP insulted not just Biplab Deb but also tall individuals across the country and even abroad. His remarks reflect poor character and judgment.”
🧠 “LoP Needs Medical Attention,” Says Nath
Nath went further, suggesting that Chaudhury’s comments stem from “frustration and depression”, and urged CPI(M) leaders to arrange medical treatment for him. He also accused the LoP of failing to uphold the legacy of past opposition leaders like Nripen Chakraborty, and of neglecting real issues in the Assembly.
🧾 Controversial Comments Spark Wider Backlash
Chaudhury, who also branded the BJP and Assam CM as “cheaters,” has drawn criticism for allegedly targeting Himanta Biswa Sarma, whom Nath described as “one of the best-performing CMs in the country.”
The minister also reminded the public of Chaudhury’s past controversies, including the “ginger scam”, and challenged him to a public debate on Tripura’s development under BJP rule.
