Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb recently met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to address the urgent maintenance needs of the Assam-Agartala National Highway (NH-8). Often referred to as Tripura’s lifeline, NH-8 plays a critical role in connecting the state with the rest of India.
Key Issues Raised
Deb highlighted the deteriorating condition of the NH-8 stretch between Churaibari and Panitilla in North Tripura district, requesting immediate repair and maintenance work. He also proposed:
- Declaring the 148-km Kamalpur-Santirbazar road as a national highway.
- Upgrading the Fulkumari-Amarpur road to national highway status.
- Expediting the four-lane expansion from Ranirbazar to Agartala Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT).
Gadkari’s Assurances
Gadkari assured swift action on these matters, recognizing their importance for regional connectivity and development. He emphasized the Centre’s commitment to improving road infrastructure in Tripura and the Northeast.
Impact on Tripura’s Connectivity
These initiatives aim to enhance transportation efficiency, reduce travel time, and support economic growth in the region. NH-8’s maintenance is expected to bolster trade and tourism, benefiting both local residents and businesses.
