The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making concerted efforts to seek Governor C. V. Ananda Bose’s intervention regarding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s controversial ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ remark. On Thursday, the BJP’s legislative team in the Assembly, led by Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, will march from the Assembly premises to Raj Bhavan to submit a deputation to the Governor, urging him to address the issue.
The BJP legislators will also request the Governor’s intervention in revoking the suspension of four party legislators, including Adhikari, who were suspended for a month. The first round of the ongoing Budget session of West Bengal is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, with the second round set to continue from March 10 to March 20.
On Wednesday, BJP state president in West Bengal and Union Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar, wrote two separate letters to the Governor. In the letters, Majumdar requested the expunging of the Chief Minister’s ‘Mrityu Kumbh’ remark from the Assembly records and sought the Governor’s intervention in revoking the suspension of the four party legislators.
The Governor has not yet commented on the Chief Minister’s remarks, which have attracted nationwide criticism. Senior Trinamool Congress leader Manas Ranjan Bhunia defended the Chief Minister, stating that her comments were selectively picked up and that she did not criticize the Maha Kumbh event itself. Bhunia emphasized that Banerjee spoke about the loss of life due to administrative mismanagement and referenced a central report indicating high levels of faecal bacteria in the river water at Prayagraj.
The BJP’s efforts to seek the Governor’s intervention highlight the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal, as the party continues to challenge the Chief Minister’s statements and actions.
