In a significant move to enhance platform security, WhatsApp has banned more than 99 lakh accounts in India during January 2025. This action, detailed in the company’s latest compliance report, reflects the Meta-owned messaging platform’s commitment to curbing spam, fraud, and other forms of misuse.
The report reveals that approximately 13.27 lakh accounts were proactively banned before receiving any user complaints, thanks to WhatsApp’s advanced automated systems. These systems monitor user activity to detect suspicious behavior, such as bulk messaging, unauthorized contact sharing, and the misuse of broadcast lists. Additionally, WhatsApp received 9,474 user complaints during the same period, leading to the banning of 239 accounts after thorough review.
The bans align with India’s Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which mandate platforms to take stringent measures against activities that compromise user safety. Common violations include sending unsolicited messages, spreading misinformation, and engaging in hate speech or illegal activities.
WhatsApp has emphasized the importance of adhering to its community guidelines to avoid account bans. Users are encouraged to message only known contacts, seek consent before adding individuals to groups, and share verified information to maintain a safe and respectful communication environment.
This crackdown underscores WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to create a secure digital space for its users in India, where the platform remains a vital communication tool for millions.

When I originally commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three e-mails
with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from
that service? Thanks a lot!
