In a significant move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from Dibrugarh district. This decision, made by the Union Home Ministry, marks a major step in Assam’s journey toward peace and stability.
AFSPA, which grants special powers to armed forces in “disturbed areas,” has been in effect in Assam since 1990 during the height of insurgency by ULFA. Over the years, the act has been gradually rolled back as the law-and-order situation improved. With this latest development, AFSPA now remains applicable in only three districts—Tinsukia, Sivasagar, and Charaideo.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the significance of this decision, stating that it aligns with the state’s vision to develop Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital. He expressed optimism that AFSPA would soon be lifted from the remaining districts as well.
This move reflects the state’s progress in curbing insurgency and fostering a safer environment for its residents. It also underscores the government’s commitment to promoting development and peace in the region.
