CSK Faces Backlash Over Devon Conway’s ‘Retired Out’ Decision Against PBKS

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have come under fire following their controversial decision to retire out Devon Conway during their IPL 2025 match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS). The move, which occurred in the 18th over with CSK needing 49 runs off 13 balls, saw Conway, who was batting on a solid 69 off 49 balls, replaced by Ravindra Jadeja. Despite the tactical substitution, CSK fell short, losing the match by 18 runs.

Critics, including former Australian cricketer Michael Clarke, have questioned the rationale behind the decision. Clarke expressed his disbelief, stating, “Retiring a player who was well-set and had spent significant time in the middle is perplexing. Conway was more than capable of hitting the required sixes.”

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad defended the move, explaining that the team believed Jadeja’s power-hitting abilities could turn the game around. However, the strategy did not yield the desired results, as even MS Dhoni’s late blitz of 27 off 12 balls could not secure a victory.

The match also highlighted a stellar performance by PBKS’s Priyansh Arya, who smashed his maiden IPL century, scoring 103 off just 42 balls. His explosive innings powered PBKS to a formidable total of 219/6, leaving CSK with an uphill battle.

This loss marks CSK’s fourth consecutive defeat in the tournament, placing them in a precarious position on the points table. The decision to retire out Conway has sparked widespread debate, with fans and experts alike questioning the team’s tactical approach. As CSK prepares for their next match against Kolkata, the pressure is mounting on the team to turn their fortunes around.
