Government Signs ₹6,900-Crore Defence Contracts with Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems

In a landmark move to bolster India’s defence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts worth ₹6,900 crore with Bharat Forge Limited and Tata Advanced Systems Limited. The agreements, announced on March 26, 2025, aim to modernize the Indian Army’s artillery regiments and enhance operational readiness.

Key Highlights of the Deal

  • Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS): Bharat Forge will supply the 155mm/52 calibre ATAGS, a state-of-the-art artillery system known for its precision and long-range strike capabilities. These guns will replace the Army’s vintage and smaller-calibre artillery, marking a significant upgrade in firepower.
  • High Mobility Gun Towing Vehicles: Tata Advanced Systems will provide high-mobility 6×6 gun towing vehicles, ensuring efficient deployment of the artillery systems in diverse terrains.

Boost to Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

This procurement marks the first major acquisition of towed guns from the private sector, reflecting India’s commitment to self-reliance under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative. The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and contribute to the growth of the indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Strategic Importance

The ATAGS, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is renowned for its exceptional lethality and precision. The system’s integration into the Army’s arsenal will enhance its capability to execute precise and long-range strikes, strengthening India’s defence posture.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, who was present at the signing ceremony, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and private sector in achieving self-reliance in defence technology. The contracts are part of the MoD’s broader capital procurement plan, which has reached ₹1.40 lakh crore in the current financial year.

This milestone underscores India’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces while fostering innovation and growth in the domestic defence industry. Stay tuned for further updates as these advanced systems are integrated into the Indian Army’s operations.
