Legendary Actor Manoj Kumar Passes Away at 87, Tributes Pour In

Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, fondly known as “Bharat Kumar” for his iconic patriotic films, passed away at the age of 87 on April 4, 2025, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. The legendary star had been battling prolonged health issues, including decompensated liver cirrhosis and cardiogenic shock due to acute myocardial infarction.

Manoj Kumar’s illustrious career spanned decades, with notable contributions to Indian cinema through films like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974). His work earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.

Tributes have poured in from across the film industry and political circles. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Kumar an “icon of Indian cinema” whose films ignited a spirit of national pride. Actor Akshay Kumar shared his grief, stating, “I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. RIP Manoj Sir. Om Shanti.” Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri described him as “India’s first truly original and committed Indic filmmaker.”

Manoj Kumar’s legacy as a pioneer of patriotic cinema and a visionary director will continue to inspire generations. His funeral is scheduled for April 5, 2025, in Mumbai, where industry colleagues and fans will gather to pay their final respects.
