Mizoram Government Prepares Draft Agreement to Transfer Lengpui Airport to IAF

Aizawl: The Mizoram government is in the process of drafting a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to hand over the state’s lone airport, Lengpui Airport, to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Chief Minister Lalduhoma made the announcement during the ongoing Assembly session, highlighting the state’s efforts to address maintenance and operational challenges at the airport.

The Lengpui Airport, located approximately 30 kilometers from Aizawl, has been under state government management since its establishment in 1998. However, the government has cited significant financial losses in operating the facility as a key reason for considering the transfer to the IAF. The draft MoA is being prepared by a reconstituted working committee, chaired by TBC Lalvenchhunga, a legislator from the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the Chief Minister’s finance and planning adviser.

The Chief Minister informed the Assembly that the draft agreement has not yet been tabled for cabinet approval. Consultative meetings with various NGOs and the NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC) have been held to discuss the matter. The government has also allocated ₹86 crore for upgrading the airport’s infrastructure, including runway improvements and increasing the Pavement Classification Number (PCN) from 36 to 50.

Despite these developments, the proposal has faced opposition from political parties, including the Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress, as well as civil society organizations like the Young Mizo Association (YMA). Critics argue that the transfer could compromise the state’s autonomy over its only airport. On March 5, MNF leaders threatened to intensify protests if the handover process continues.

The Lengpui Airport serves as a vital transportation hub for Mizoram, connecting the state to major cities like Guwahati, Kolkata, and New Delhi. With an average daily passenger movement of 700, the airport has also become a preferred choice for travelers from neighboring Manipur due to security concerns.

As discussions continue, the state government aims to strike a balance between addressing financial constraints and ensuring the airport’s efficient operation. Further updates are awaited as the draft MoA progresses toward finalization.
