Mizoram Student Body Accuses Assam of Land Encroachment Over Bridge Construction

Tensions have flared along the Assam-Mizoram border after a Mizoram-based student organization accused Assam authorities of land encroachment during the construction of a bridge. The dispute has reignited concerns over territorial claims between the two northeastern states, which have a history of border conflicts.

According to reports, Mizoram officials alleged that Assam police personnel entered Zophai near Bairabi town in Mizoram’s Kolasib district and removed construction materials from a bridge site. The Mizoram government has since filed a case against Assam police, accusing them of theft and unauthorized interference in the project.

On the other hand, Assam authorities have countered the claims, stating that Mizoram attempted to construct the bridge inside Assam’s territory at Kachurthal in Hailakandi district without prior approval. Assam police reportedly halted the construction, citing it as an illegal trespass and a violation of the August 5 joint peace agreement between the two states.

The incident has escalated tensions, with both states maintaining their respective positions. Mizoram officials argue that the bridge was meant to connect a paddy field belonging to Mizoram’s first Chief Minister, C Chhunga, while Assam authorities insist that the construction was unauthorized.

As the dispute unfolds, local leaders and security forces are working to prevent further escalation. Both state governments have been urged to engage in dialogue and peaceful resolution to avoid another border standoff.
