PM Modi Meets Bangladesh Chief Adviser Yunus, Highlights Concerns Over Minority Safety

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, marking their first interaction since the ouster of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. The meeting comes amid strained ties between the two nations, with India expressing concerns over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus.

During the bilateral talks, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to fostering a democratic, stable, and inclusive Bangladesh. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of minorities and urged the Bangladeshi government to thoroughly investigate incidents of violence targeting these communities. “India remains steadfast in its support for peace and inclusivity in Bangladesh,” PM Modi stated.

The leaders also discussed regional cooperation under the BIMSTEC framework, with Bangladesh set to assume the chairmanship of the grouping. PM Modi congratulated Yunus on this role and expressed optimism about advancing regional integration and connectivity.

The meeting follows Yunus’ recent controversial remarks during his visit to China, where he referred to India’s northeastern states as “landlocked” and positioned Bangladesh as their “guardian of ocean access.” These comments sparked criticism in India, further straining bilateral relations.

Despite the challenges, PM Modi emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and collaboration to address mutual concerns and strengthen ties. The meeting underscores India’s focus on regional stability and its commitment to protecting the rights of minorities in neighboring countries.
