Tripura: Tribal Student Body Ends Agitation Over Kokborok Script Issue

Agartala: The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), the largest tribal student organization in Tripura, has called off its indefinite statewide agitation over the Kokborok language script issue. The decision came after a crucial meeting with Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday evening, where assurances were made to address their demands.

The TSF had been protesting for the adoption of the Roman script for Kokborok, the lingua franca of the tribal communities in Tripura. Their agitation included road blockades and demonstrations, which disrupted daily life in several parts of the state. The student body also demanded a review of the CBSE Class 10 and 12 examinations for Kokborok, citing issues with question papers being provided in the Bengali script.

Following the meeting, TSF leaders expressed optimism about the government’s commitment to resolving the matter. “The Chief Minister assured us that he would discuss our demands with the cabinet and other leaders. We are hopeful that genuine efforts will be made to address the concerns of Kokborok-speaking students,” said TSF General Secretary Hamalu Jamatia.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, in a statement, emphasized the government’s dedication to preserving the cultural and linguistic heritage of Tripura’s tribal communities. “We respect the thoughts, culture, and traditions of all people. The Kokborok script issue is being studied sincerely, and we aim to find a solution that benefits everyone,” he said.

The TSF has decided to temporarily withdraw its strike but has announced plans to form a joint committee with like-minded organizations to monitor the government’s actions. The Kokborok script debate has been ongoing for years, with various tribal groups advocating for either the Roman or Bengali script.

This development marks a temporary pause in the agitation, but the TSF has made it clear that they will resume protests if their demands are not met. The resolution of the Kokborok script issue remains a significant challenge for the state government, as it seeks to balance the aspirations of the tribal population with broader administrative considerations.
