Waqf Amendment Act Sparks Violence in Manipur

Lilong, April 7, 2025 – Tensions have escalated in Manipur following the passage of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, as the residence of BJP Minority Morcha’s Manipur President Md Asker Ali was torched by a mob in Lilong. The attack, reportedly involving 7,000 to 8,000 people, occurred on Sunday evening in response to Ali’s public support for the controversial legislation.

The Waqf Amendment Act, which received presidential assent on April 5, has faced widespread opposition from various groups, including political parties and religious organizations. Critics argue that the Act imposes arbitrary restrictions on the management of Waqf properties, undermining the autonomy of the Muslim community. The legislation has also been challenged in the Supreme Court, with petitions citing violations of constitutional rights.

In Manipur, protests against the Act have intensified, particularly in Muslim-majority areas such as Lilong and Sora. Demonstrators have clashed with security forces, leading to heightened tensions and the deployment of additional personnel in affected regions.

Md Asker Ali has since apologized for his social media posts supporting the legislation and urged the Union government to reconsider the Act. Authorities have imposed restrictions on gatherings and the carrying of weapons in Lilong to maintain peace and prevent further unrest. The situation remains volatile, with the state government closely monitoring developments.
