The Tripura government has decided to relocate a ₹1.5 crore crematorium project originally planned near the zero line of the India-Bangladesh border in Mohanpur, West Tripura district. The decision comes after objections from the Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB), which stalled the project for three years.
As per international norms, new constructions within 150 yards of the border require prior approval from the neighboring country. Despite repeated attempts, the BGB did not grant clearance for the crematorium, citing concerns over the height of the proposed structure. The project included a modern electric furnace with a 120-foot chimney, but any structure exceeding 40 feet required Bangladesh’s approval, which was denied.
To avoid further delays, the Tripura administration has identified a new location near the bypass highway, ensuring the cremation ground can be built without diplomatic complications. The funds for the project had already been allocated, and much of the supporting infrastructure was completed by the Rural Development Department. Only the installation of the electric furnace remained stalled due to the clearance issue.
The relocation decision aims to provide the community with access to a proper cremation facility while addressing diplomatic concerns. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of this project and its impact on the region.
