Bangladesh Resumes Payments to Adani Group, Power Supply Restored

In a significant development, the Adani Group has fully restored electricity supply to Bangladesh after the country resumed payments for power dues. The supply, which had been halved in November 2024 due to unpaid bills, has now returned to full capacity, easing the risk of blackouts during the sweltering summer months.

The Adani Power plant in Godda, Jharkhand, supplies 1,600 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh under a 25-year power purchase agreement. However, financial challenges, including a foreign exchange crisis, had led to payment delays, with outstanding dues reportedly reaching $800 million. The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has since begun making regular payments, covering current consumption and gradually addressing arrears.

The restoration of power supply marks a positive step in repairing business ties between the two nations. BPDB Chairman Rezaul Karim confirmed that Bangladesh is now receiving electricity as per its requirements, highlighting the importance of this collaboration in meeting the country’s energy needs.

This development underscores the critical role of cross-border energy partnerships in ensuring regional stability and economic growth. The Adani Group’s decision to resume full supply reflects its commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s energy infrastructure while addressing financial concerns.
