Glenn Maxwell Announces Shock Retirement from ODI Cricket, Prioritizes T20 Future

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket, bringing an end to a stellar career spanning over a decade. The 36-year-old, known for his explosive batting and match-winning performances, confirmed his decision on the Final Word Podcast, citing physical demands and a desire to focus on T20 cricket.

Maxwell’s ODI Legacy

Maxwell played 149 ODIs for Australia, amassing 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81, with a strike rate of 126.70—the second-highest in ODI history after Andre Russell. His most iconic innings came during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he smashed an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls against Afghanistan, rescuing Australia from 91/7 and leading them to victory.

Reasons Behind Retirement

Maxwell revealed that his body was struggling to cope with the demands of 50-over cricket, especially after battling injuries, including a broken leg in 2022 and a finger injury during IPL 2025. He stated, “I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions”.

Focus on T20 Cricket & Future Plans

Despite stepping away from ODIs, Maxwell remains committed to T20 cricket, including the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. He will continue playing in global T20 leagues, including the Big Bash League (BBL) and IPL.

Tributes & Reactions

Cricket Australia acknowledged Maxwell’s immense contribution, with CEO Todd Greenberg stating, “Crowds came to see Glenn bat. His explosive style has inspired the next generation”. Fans and former players have hailed his fearless approach, calling his retirement the end of an era.

Maxwell’s departure marks a new chapter for Australian cricket, as selectors look to groom fresh talent ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
