As India advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 Champions Trophy, the team found itself embroiled in controversy. Critics and opposition members alleged that Rohit Sharma’s squad had an “undeniable advantage” due to all their group matches being played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly defended the team, countering claims of an unfair advantage. Ganguly boldly asserted that India’s batsmen would have scored even more runs if their matches had been held in Pakistan instead of Dubai.
The controversy intensified when former England cricketers Nasser Hussain and Mike Atherton criticized India for playing all their group stage matches in Dubai, while other teams had to travel between two countries. England’s Jos Buttler and South Africa’s Rassie van der-Dussen echoed these sentiments, suggesting an unfair advantage for India.
Ganguly responded passionately to these claims during a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) event on Sunday. “The pitches in Pakistan are much better. India would’ve scored more runs there,” Ganguly stated, as quoted by Hindustan Times.
Due to ongoing political and security concerns, the Indian government prevented the national cricket team from traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. Consequently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) proposed a hybrid model, with matches involving India being hosted at a neutral venue. Dubai was selected as the venue for all of India’s Champions Trophy matches.
This controversy has added an extra layer of intrigue to India’s journey in the tournament, as the team continues to face scrutiny and challenges both on and off the field.
