Israel PM Netanyahu Withdraws Security Chief Nominee Amid Controversy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reversed his decision to appoint Vice Admiral Eli Sharvit as the new head of the Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security agency, following widespread criticism, including objections from U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of former President Donald Trump.

The controversy erupted after Sharvit’s nomination was announced on March 31, 2025, despite a Supreme Court order temporarily freezing the dismissal of the incumbent Shin Bet chief, Ronen Bar. Reports revealed that Sharvit had previously opposed key policies of both Netanyahu’s government and Trump’s administration, including a 2022 water agreement with Lebanon and climate change policies.

Senator Graham described Sharvit’s appointment as “beyond problematic,” citing his critical stance on Trump’s policies. Netanyahu’s office later issued a statement thanking Sharvit for his willingness to serve but confirmed that the prime minister would consider other candidates for the role.

The decision to dismiss Ronen Bar, initially justified by Netanyahu as stemming from an “ongoing lack of trust,” has sparked mass protests in Jerusalem and raised concerns about a potential constitutional crisis. Opposition leaders have criticized the timing and manner of the dismissal, warning of escalating tensions between the judiciary and the executive.

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear petitions against Bar’s removal on April 8, Netanyahu’s handling of the Shin Bet leadership has drawn scrutiny both domestically and internationally. The situation underscores the challenges facing the Israeli government amid ongoing political and security tensions.
