The Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala, Tripura, is on the verge of being declared an immigration airport, paving the way for its transformation into an international airport. Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury made the announcement during the inauguration of the Domestic Air Cargo Terminal at the airport on Monday.
Chowdhury revealed that the state government has submitted a memorandum to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry, seeking the airport’s designation as an immigration facility. The proposal has reportedly received a positive response, with consultations underway with the Ministry of Home Affairs. The minister emphasized that the move would enhance connectivity and boost economic growth in the region.
Currently, MBB Airport handles around 30 flights daily, with an average of 2,000 passengers. It has already been declared a customs airport, and the state government is now working to meet the additional manpower and infrastructure requirements for its elevation to immigration status.
The airport, named after Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur, the last ruling king of Tripura, has been a vital transportation hub for the northeastern state. With its new terminal inaugurated in 2022, the airport is equipped to handle both domestic and international passengers simultaneously.
The development is expected to strengthen Tripura’s position as a gateway to Southeast Asia, fostering trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. Further updates are awaited as the central government reviews the proposal.
