In a dramatic turn of events, the Malad police have arrested Ashish Sayal, a 32-year-old office boy employed by renowned music composer Pritam Chakraborty, for allegedly stealing a substantial sum of ₹40 lakh from Chakraborty’s studio.
*The Crime and Escape*
The incident took place on February 4 when Sayal allegedly absconded with a bag containing the cash. The Malad police swiftly registered a case against him the following day, February 5. According to PSI Tushar Sukhdeve, after committing the crime, Sayal spent the entire night moving across various parts of Mumbai’s suburbs. His elaborate route involved multiple auto-rickshaw rides and considerable walking in an attempt to evade police detection.
*The Chase and Arrest*
The police undertook an intensive investigation, examining around 200 CCTV footage clips over eight days and nights, which eventually led them to trace Sayal to Versova. Further investigations revealed that he had fled to Jammu and Kashmir. A dedicated police team was dispatched to track him down. By carefully reviewing hotel and roadside CCTV footage, they traced Sayal to the Samba railway station area in Samba district, Jammu and Kashmir.
The police gathered local residents and, with the assistance of the local police, located Sayal in Manohar Gopala village, where he was promptly arrested. Sayal, a native of Digiana in Jammu and Kashmir, confessed to the crime during interrogation. A raid at his residence led to the recovery of ₹36.91 lakh, a laptop, and an iPhone purchased using the stolen money.
*Recovery and Return to Mumbai*
The Malad police successfully recovered 95% of the stolen cash. Sayal was brought back to Mumbai in the early hours on a transit remand. The operation was spearheaded by PSI Tushar Sukhdeve and his detection team, under the guidance of DCP-Zone 11 Anand Bhoite, Senior Inspector Vijaykumar Panhale, and Police Inspector Sanjay Bedwal.
The diligent efforts and coordination among the police teams ensured the swift apprehension of the accused and the recovery of the majority of the stolen funds. This incident serves as a testament to the Mumbai police’s commitment to upholding law and order and bringing perpetrators to justice.
