PM Modi Meets Myanmar Junta Chief, Reaffirms India’s Commitment to Earthquake Recovery

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Myanmar’s junta chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, reaffirming India’s commitment to assist Myanmar in its recovery from the devastating earthquake that struck on March 28, 2025. The 7.7-magnitude quake caused widespread destruction, claiming over 3,000 lives and displacing thousands.

During the meeting, PM Modi expressed condolences for the loss of lives and property and highlighted India’s ongoing efforts under “Operation Brahma,” a comprehensive relief initiative. India has already deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, set up a field hospital in Mandalay, and delivered over 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including food, medicine, and emergency supplies.

The Prime Minister assured Myanmar of India’s readiness to provide additional assistance, emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations. “India stands with Myanmar in this critical time and will continue to support its recovery and rebuilding efforts,” PM Modi stated.

The leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation in areas such as connectivity, capacity building, and infrastructure development. PM Modi reiterated the importance of restoring democracy in Myanmar through inclusive and credible elections, stressing that enduring peace can only be achieved through dialogue.
