India’s ambitious IndiaAI Mission has achieved a major milestone with the successful installation of over 17,300 high-performance GPUs, marking a significant leap in the country’s AI infrastructure development. The initiative, backed by a ₹10,372 crore budget, aims to democratize access to AI compute resources for startups, researchers, and public institutions across the nation.
Strategic Expansion of AI Compute Infrastructure
The GPUs have been deployed under the IndiaAI Compute Infrastructure Tender, which received proposals for 34,333 GPUs in its first two rounds. The mission’s goal is to build a scalable, cloud-based AI compute platform that supports the training and deployment of advanced AI models, including large language models (LLMs).
Key cloud service providers (CSPs) such as Yotta, NextGen, and E2E Networks have made significant progress in installing and commissioning their allocated GPUs. Yotta alone is contributing over 4,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, with a portion already allocated to Indian AI startups like Sarvam and Bhashini.
Empowering Indian AI Startups and Research
The IndiaAI Mission is not just about hardware—it’s also about nurturing a robust AI ecosystem. The government is incentivizing the development of indigenous LLMs by startups such as Sarvam, Gnani, Gan, and Soket AI Labs. These efforts are expected to reduce dependency on foreign AI models and foster innovation within India’s tech landscape.
Integration and Future Outlook
The GPUs are being integrated with the IndiaAI Compute Portal, which will allow approved users—including academia, MSMEs, and government agencies—to access compute power at up to 40% reduced cost. While some CSPs like Jio Platforms and CtrlS Datacenters are still in the process of completing their installations and API integrations, they have until August 7 to fulfill their commitments.
With the third round of bidding already concluded and more GPUs expected to come online soon, India is well on its way to becoming a global AI powerhouse. The mission’s progress underscores the government’s commitment to self-reliance in AI technology and its vision of making AI accessible, affordable, and inclusive.
