Assault Allegations Rock Assam Legislature: Hazarika Accuses Huda

The Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed unprecedented chaos on March 24, 2025, as Minister Pijush Hazarika accused Congress MLA Nurul Huda of physically assaulting Deputy Speaker Numal Momin. The alleged incident occurred just outside the Assembly, leading to a heated political standoff and the adjournment of the House.

Hazarika condemned the alleged attack, calling it an “insult to the Assembly and the Constitution.” He emphasized that such actions undermine the sanctity of the democratic institution. The Deputy Speaker, reportedly hospitalized following the incident, has urged the Speaker to initiate a police investigation.

The Congress party, however, has denied the allegations, with Huda claiming he merely blocked Momin’s way during a protest. The opposition staged demonstrations against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, accusing him of aggressive behavior and verbal abuse during a previous debate. Congress legislators donned black shirts, while AIUDF members carried symbolic bamboo structures to express their dissent.

The Speaker adjourned the House for 10 minutes to restore order, but tensions remain high. The incident has sparked a broader debate on the conduct of legislators and the impartiality of the Assembly’s leadership.

As the political drama unfolds, the people of Assam await clarity and accountability from their elected representatives. The incident highlights the urgent need for decorum and mutual respect in the state’s legislative proceedings.
