Thirteen Bangladeshi Nationals Deported from Assam’s Matia Transit Camp

In a significant development, the Assam government has deported 13 Bangladeshi nationals from the Matia Transit Camp, as confirmed by the Centre to the Supreme Court. This marks a crucial step in addressing the issue of illegal immigration in the state.

The deportation process involved close coordination with the Bangladesh High Commission, which verified the nationality of the detainees. The Ministry of External Affairs facilitated the necessary travel documents, ensuring a smooth repatriation process. The deported individuals were among 63 detainees whose nationalities had been confirmed earlier.

The Supreme Court, which has been monitoring the situation, directed the Assam government to expedite the verification and deportation of the remaining detainees. The court also emphasized the need for a clear policy to address cases where nationality remains undetermined, urging the Centre to provide a comprehensive plan by April 30, 2025.

This development highlights the ongoing efforts to manage illegal immigration in Assam while ensuring compliance with legal and humanitarian standards. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for May 6, 2025, where further updates on the deportation process are expected.
