In a significant step towards animal welfare, the Tripura government has announced plans to open Goshalas (cow shelters) in all eight districts of the state. The initiative, spearheaded by Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das, aims to provide a safe haven for rescued and abandoned cows while promoting ethical treatment and care.
Minister Das revealed that the Goshalas will be equipped with modern facilities to ensure the well-being of the animals. These shelters will focus on providing adequate nutrition, clean water, and regular veterinary care. Additionally, the government plans to engage local communities and NGOs to support the initiative and raise awareness about animal welfare.
The decision comes in response to increasing concerns over the rising number of stray and abandoned cattle in the state. By establishing these shelters, the government seeks to address the issue while aligning with cultural and ethical values that emphasize the protection of cows.
The project is expected to be implemented in phases, with the first set of Goshalas becoming operational by the end of 2025. The government has allocated a dedicated budget for the initiative and is exploring partnerships with private organizations to ensure its sustainability.
This move underscores the Tripura government’s commitment to animal welfare and rural development, setting an example for other states to follow. The Goshalas are anticipated to play a vital role in improving the lives of rescued cows and fostering a compassionate approach to animal care.
