Ameesha Patel Defends Fawad Khan Amid Controversy Over Bollywood Comeback

Mumbai, April 7, 2025 – Bollywood actress Ameesha Patel has come forward to defend Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, who is facing backlash for his role in the upcoming Bollywood film Abir Gulaal. The romantic comedy, co-starring Vaani Kapoor, marks Khan’s return to Indian cinema after a nine-year hiatus, reigniting debates over the involvement of Pakistani artists in Bollywood.

Speaking to IANS, Patel emphasized India’s rich cultural heritage and its tradition of welcoming talent from across the globe. “Art transcends borders,” she stated. “We welcome every actor and musician. This is the culture of India. So art is art; I don’t differentiate.”

The film’s teaser, released on April 1, has sparked controversy, with political groups like the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) opposing its release in Maharashtra. Critics argue that featuring Pakistani artists disregards national sentiments, especially in light of strained relations between India and Pakistan.

Despite the opposition, Patel’s support for Khan has added a new dimension to the ongoing debate. The actress highlighted the importance of celebrating art and talent, regardless of nationality, and expressed her belief in the unifying power of creative expression.

Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, Abir Gulaal is set to hit theaters on May 9, 2025. As the controversy unfolds, the film’s release is being closely watched by industry insiders and audiences alike.
