Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the state has achieved a remarkable milestone, emerging as India’s third fastest-growing state with a Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth rate of 7.94% at constant prices. The announcement underscores Assam’s economic transformation, driven by pro-investor policies and sustained investments in infrastructure, institutions, and human capital.
In a statement, CM Sarma expressed pride in the state’s progress, calling it a testament to the government’s focused efforts. “Assam is now India’s 3rd fastest-growing state, with a GDP growth rate of 7.94% at constant prices. A few years ago, this was unthinkable,” he remarked. The Chief Minister attributed the growth to initiatives such as the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, which has attracted significant investments and bolstered the state’s economic stature.
Assam’s rapid growth has been accompanied by a surge in capital expenditure, which has increased from ₹2,951 crore in 2015–16 to a projected ₹24,964 crore in 2024–25. The state’s debt-to-GDP ratio remains at a healthy 25%, reflecting fiscal prudence. Additionally, 17 profitable public sector undertakings (PSUs) contribute a collective net wealth of ₹40,000 crore, further strengthening Assam’s financial position.
The state government has also prioritized infrastructure development, with projects such as high-speed corridors connecting Guwahati to Silchar and Dibrugarh, as well as the completion of the Jorhat-Dibrugarh National Highway. These initiatives aim to enhance connectivity and unlock Assam’s economic potential as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
CM Sarma credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for empowering northeastern states, calling this period a “golden era” for the region. He expressed confidence that Assam’s growth trajectory would continue, positioning the state as a key player in India’s economic landscape.
With its impressive GDP growth and strategic investments, Assam is setting a benchmark for other states, showcasing the possibilities of sustainable and inclusive development.
