The Delhi government, led by the BJP, has announced a transformative initiative to enhance public transport accessibility for women. The administration will soon launch lifetime smart cards, enabling women residing in Delhi to avail free bus travel on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses. This move replaces the previous “pink ticket” system introduced in 2019 by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
The registration process for the smart cards is set to begin within the next two to three weeks. Women applicants will need to provide proof of residence in Delhi to qualify for the scheme. The smart cards aim to eliminate corruption and inefficiencies associated with the pink ticket system, which faced allegations of misuse and lack of transparency.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the government’s commitment to empowering women and modernizing Delhi’s public transport system. “We are dedicated to providing this service to women while ensuring transparency and efficiency. The introduction of digital travel cards will put an end to the irregularities tied to physical tickets,” she stated.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of creating a globally recognized, reliable, and accessible public transport network. During the recent Budget Session, the Delhi government allocated ₹12,952 crore for public transport development, a significant increase from the previous year’s ₹9,337 crore.
The lifetime smart cards are expected to revolutionize the commuting experience for women in Delhi, fostering greater inclusivity and convenience. Stay tuned for updates on the registration process and the rollout of this landmark initiative.
