Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to release the 19th instalment of the PM-KISAN scheme on Monday, transferring around ₹22,000 crore directly to the bank accounts of 9.8 crore farmers. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing effort to enhance the income of the farming community.
Scheme Details
Under the PM-KISAN scheme, each beneficiary receives an annual benefit of ₹6,000, disbursed in three equal installments of ₹2,000 every four months. Addressing a press conference, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that the Prime Minister will release the 19th instalment on February 24 at a function in Bhagalpur, Bihar. The amount will be directly credited to the bank accounts of eligible farmers.
Chouhan mentioned that the number of beneficiaries has increased from 9.6 crore in the 18th instalment to 9.8 crore in the current instalment. The government has disbursed a total of ₹3.46 lakh crore so far under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, and this number will rise to ₹3.68 lakh crore after the release of the 19th instalment.
World’s Largest DBT Scheme
Launched in February 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme is the world’s largest direct benefit transfer (DBT) scheme, helping farmers meet their expenses towards the purchase of seeds and fertilizers. When asked about talks with protesting farmers in Punjab, Chouhan emphasized that the government has been holding discussions with the farming community and will continue to do so.
Government’s Commitment to Farmers
Chouhan reiterated the government’s commitment to increasing production, reducing input costs, enhancing farmers’ income, and encouraging natural farming. He also pointed out that the Congress party, despite its claims of supporting farmers’ welfare, never provided direct financial assistance to farmers when they were in power.
Event Highlights
The event at Bhagalpur is expected to see participation from around 2.5 crore farmers, both physically and virtually. The Bihar Governor, Chief Minister, and central ministers from the state will also attend the event. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate a dairy processing unit in Barauni, a center of excellence under the Gokul Mission, and a couple of rail projects in the state.
Chouhan clarified that the release of the 19th instalment from Bhagalpur should not be linked to the upcoming assembly election in Bihar, noting that the Prime Minister has been releasing the instalments from different states.
Furthermore, Chouhan announced his plans to meet Makhana farmers in Darbhanga on February 23 to understand the challenges they face. He added that the Makhana Board proposed in this year’s Budget will soon be established.
This release of the PM-KISAN instalment underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to support and uplift the farming community across India.
