Google Announces Free Gemini AI-Powered Coding Assistant for All Users

Google Cloud has unveiled Gemini Code Assist, a generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI)-based bot designed to aid programmers in software development. According to a Google-commissioned DORA research report, over 75% of developers worldwide use gen AI applications to write efficient code, with 25% of the code created at Google generated by gen AI tools.

Historically, gen AI-based applications for coding have been expensive, accessible mainly to large corporations. However, Google is now offering Gemini Code Assist for free to individual users, a move that is expected to benefit freelance software developers and talented students eager to develop their own apps.

### Key Features and Benefits

Ryan J. Salva, Senior Director of Product Management at Google Cloud, explained, “We fine-tuned the Gemini 2.0 model for developers by analyzing and validating a large number of real-world coding use cases. As a result, the quality of AI-generated recommendations in Gemini Code Assist is better than ever before and ready to address the myriad of daily challenges developers face, whether they’re hobbyists or startup developers.”

Some rival brands offer limited access to their applications, with up to 2,000 code completions per month. In contrast, Google’s Gemini Code Assist provides individual users with up to 180,000 code completions per month—nearly 90 times more than other popular free coding assistants in the market.

### Capabilities of Gemini Code Assist

– *Bug Detection*: Users can utilize Gemini Code Assist to find bugs in their code. The tool offers logical explanations and helps create more efficient code.

– *Learning and Development*: The assistant can be used to learn coding, create code snippets, debug, and modify existing applications.

– *Broad Language Support*: Gemini Code Assist supports more than 20 programming languages.

### Integration and Accessibility

Google Cloud also announced a public preview of Gemini Code Assist for GitHub users, providing free, AI-powered code reviews for both public and private repositories. The assistant can now be installed as an add-on on Visual Studio Code, GitHub, and JetBrains IDEs (Integrated Development Environment).

### Impact on the Developer Community

This move is expected to democratize access to advanced coding tools, empowering individual developers and students to enhance their coding skills and productivity. By making these powerful tools accessible to a broader audience, Google is fostering innovation and skill development in the tech community.
