Zelenskyy Accuses Russia of Prolonging War as Kremlin Dismisses Ceasefire Proposal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of deliberately prolonging the ongoing conflict, following remarks by a senior Kremlin aide dismissing a proposed ceasefire as a mere “temporary respite” for Ukraine. The comments come amidst heightened tensions and international efforts to broker peace in the region.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia’s lack of a meaningful response to the ceasefire proposal, backed by the United States, underscores its intent to extend the war. “This once again demonstrates that Russia seeks to prolong the war and postpone peace for as long as possible,” Zelenskyy stated in a social media post. He urged the U.S. to exert pressure on Moscow to bring an end to the conflict.

The proposed 30-day ceasefire, supported by Ukraine, has been met with skepticism from the Kremlin. Yuri Ushakov, a senior aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, described the proposal as a “temporary reprieve” for Ukrainian forces. Ushakov reiterated Russia’s stance, advocating for a long-term settlement that aligns with Moscow’s strategic interests. “Steps that merely imitate peaceful actions are not needed by anyone in this situation,” he remarked during a televised interview.

The development coincides with ongoing diplomatic efforts, as U.S. and Russian officials prepare to meet in Moscow to discuss the ceasefire proposal. U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the potential for a peace agreement, while also hinting at possible sanctions should Russia refuse to engage constructively.

As the conflict enters its third year, the international community remains divided on the path to resolution. Zelenskyy’s call for decisive action highlights the urgency of the situation, as both sides continue to grapple with the devastating consequences of the war. The proposed ceasefire, though contentious, represents a critical juncture in the pursuit of peace in the region.
