Iran Expresses ‘Extreme Caution’ Over Nuclear Talks with US Amid Major Differences

Muscat: Iran has voiced extreme caution regarding the success of its ongoing nuclear negotiations with the United States, citing major unresolved differences after the third round of talks held in Oman.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, speaking to state media, acknowledged that while discussions were serious and technical, key disagreements persist. “There is seriousness and determination on both sides, but our optimism remains extremely cautious,” Araqchi stated.

Key Developments in the Talks

  • The third round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the US took place in Muscat, mediated by Omani officials.
  • Both sides agreed to continue discussions next week, with a high-level meeting scheduled for May 3.
  • The US delegation, led by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, described the talks as positive and productive, but emphasized that significant work remains.

Major Sticking Points

Iran seeks sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program, but Washington insists that Tehran must halt uranium enrichment entirely. The US has also demanded that Iran import enriched uranium rather than producing it domestically.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump, who reinstated maximum pressure sanctions on Iran in February 2025, has warned that military action remains an option if diplomacy fails.

Regional Tensions and Security Concerns

Shortly after the talks began, Iranian media reported a massive explosion at Shahid Rajaee port near Bandar Abbas, killing four people and injuring hundreds. While the cause remains unclear, the incident has heightened concerns over regional stability.

With another round of negotiations set to take place in Europe, both nations face mounting pressure to bridge their differences and reach a diplomatic resolution.
