Hamas Agrees to Release Five Hostages for Eid al-Fitr Ceasefire

In a significant development, Hamas has agreed to release five hostages, including American-Israeli citizen Edan Alexander, as part of a ceasefire proposal mediated by Egypt and Qatar. The ceasefire, set to coincide with the Eid al-Fitr holiday, aims to halt hostilities in Gaza for 50 days and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies.

Egyptian officials described the agreement as a critical step, stating, “The ball is now in the Israeli government and Americans’ court.” The proposal also includes the release of Palestinian prisoners and the establishment of mechanisms to ensure civilian relief.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that Israel has submitted a counter-proposal, seeking the release of additional hostages and extending the ceasefire through Passover. The ongoing negotiations highlight the complexities of achieving a lasting resolution in the region.

As the conflict continues, Gaza health authorities report over 50,000 fatalities since the military campaign began, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian intervention. The international community remains hopeful that this ceasefire could pave the way for broader peace talks and alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza.
