Mizoram Records Over 30,000 HIV Cases, Prompting Immediate Medical Intervention

Mizoram has recorded the highest prevalence of HIV in India, with a rate of 2.73 percent, significantly surpassing the national average of 0.2 percent, according to recent reports. As of January 2025, Mizoram has reported a total of 32,287 positive HIV cases, with 5,511 deaths. Between April 2024 and January 2025 alone, 1,769 new cases were detected in the state, highlighting an alarming rate of HIV-positive cases.

*Urgent Measures Needed*

Addressing a meeting of the Mizoram Legislative Forum on AIDS, Health Minister Lalrinpuii emphasized the urgent need for decisive action against the epidemic. “Mizoram’s infection rate is far higher than the national average of 0.2 percent. This necessitates urgent measures,” Lalrinpuii stated, urging legislators to take more decisive action to curb the rising infection rates.

*HIV: A Dangerous Virus*

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a severe virus that primarily attacks the body’s immune system. When the immune system is compromised, the body loses its ability to defend against infections and diseases. HIV can lead to weak immunity, AIDS, and is a chronic, lifelong debilitating disease with no cure. Once a person tests positive for HIV, there is currently no way to cure it.

*Modes of HIV Transmission*

HIV transmission can occur through the exchange or exposure to body fluids such as semen, blood, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. The transmission commonly occurs during sexual intercourse, through sharing needles, or from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding. These transmission routes are highly risky and can spread the virus easily if one is exposed.

*Conclusion*

The high prevalence of HIV in Mizoram calls for immediate and effective interventions to address the rising infection rates. The state government and health authorities must collaborate to implement preventive measures, provide medical support, and raise awareness to combat the spread of HIV in the region.
