In a significant boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah revealed that over 4.40 crore tourists, including 1.20 lakh foreigners, visited the region in the past two years. Addressing the assembly on Tuesday, the chief minister emphasized the sector’s immense potential in generating employment and driving economic growth.
### Record-Breaking Tourist Influx
According to CM Abdullah, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 2,11,24,674 tourists in 2023 and 2,35,24,629 in 2024. Among these, 55,337 foreign tourists visited in 2023, while 65,452 foreigners explored the region in 2024. The chief minister highlighted that the influx of pilgrims and travelers underscores the region’s growing appeal as a global tourist destination.
### Investment in Tourism Promotion
The government has allocated ₹35.08 crore over the past two financial years for the promotion and advertisement of Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector. Of this, ₹12.54 crore was spent in FY 2023-24, and ₹22.54 crore in FY 2024-25. These investments aim to enhance the region’s visibility and attract more visitors from across the globe.
### Employment Potential in Tourism
CM Abdullah stressed the extensive employment opportunities offered by the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir. While acknowledging that the sector employs a significant workforce, he noted that no formal survey has been conducted to determine the exact number of jobs generated.
### Outsourcing of Tourism Assets
The chief minister also informed the assembly that 59 assets of the Tourism Department have been outsourced over the past two years. This move is expected to improve the management and utilization of these assets, further boosting the region’s tourism infrastructure.
