TMC’s Derek O’Brien Criticizes PM Modi’s Maha Kumbh Statement as ‘Damage-Control Speech’

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien has strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement in the Lok Sabha on the Maha Kumbh, calling it a “damage-control speech.” The remarks were made during a press briefing, where O’Brien accused the Prime Minister of using the statement to divert attention from pressing issues, including tariffs imposed by the United States.

O’Brien, who serves as the TMC’s Parliamentary Party leader in the Rajya Sabha, expressed frustration over the lack of opportunity for opposition MPs to seek clarifications on the Prime Minister’s statement. “Parliament is not ‘Mann ki Baat’; it is a platform for two-way communication,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and accountability in a democratic setup.

The TMC leader also criticized the government’s handling of the Maha Kumbh discussion, alleging that it was an attempt to overshadow international and domestic challenges. He further pointed out that the Prime Minister has yet to address questions on the floor of Parliament or hold a formal press conference.

Prime Minister Modi, in his statement, had highlighted the Maha Kumbh as a symbol of India’s unity and organizational capability. He praised the contributions of government workers and volunteers in making the event a success, which saw participation from over 66 crore people. However, opposition leaders, including O’Brien, have questioned the intent and timing of the statement, accusing the government of using it as a distraction.

The exchange underscores the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and the opposition, with both sides presenting contrasting narratives on key national issues. As the debate continues, the focus remains on fostering meaningful dialogue within the parliamentary framework.
