TMC Slams Sukanta Majumdar’s ‘Sonagachhi Slur’ on Policing; FIR Filed Amid Outrage

A political storm has erupted in West Bengal after BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar made controversial remarks comparing the state’s policing to the “standards of Sonagachhi sex workers.” The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has condemned the statement as “dehumanizing and disgraceful”, demanding an unconditional apology and filing an FIR against the BJP leader.

🔥 TMC’s Sharp Rebuttal

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh criticized Majumdar’s language, calling it “shocking” coming from an educated leader and junior education minister.

“Sonagachhi’s sex workers are among the most marginalized and exploited. They deserve dignity, not ridicule,” Ghosh said.

Women and Child Development Minister Shashi Panja added,

“He has insulted not just sex workers but every woman in Bengal. This is unacceptable from someone holding constitutional office”.

📝 FIR Filed

An FIR was registered on Saturday following a complaint by TMC councillor Sunanda Sarkar, who represents Ward 18, which includes the Sonagachhi area. The complaint accuses Majumdar of defamation and promoting enmity, citing the emotional and social harm caused to the community.

🧭 BJP Yet to Respond

While the BJP has not issued an official statement, party insiders claim the remarks were taken out of context. However, the silence has only intensified criticism from civil society and rights groups.

🌍 Broader Implications

The controversy has reignited discussions around the rights and dignity of sex workers, with activists urging political leaders to avoid using vulnerable communities as metaphors for political attacks.

Stay tuned for developments in this unfolding political row.
