UP Govt Develops 243 High-Yield Sugarcane Varieties to Boost Farmers’ Income and Agricultural Prosperity

In a major stride toward agricultural innovation and rural empowerment, the Uttar Pradesh government has developed 243 high-yield sugarcane varieties, aimed at enhancing farmers’ income, crop resilience, and productivity across the state. This initiative is part of the Yogi Adityanath-led administration’s broader mission to revitalize the sugarcane economy and make farming more profitable for lakhs of cultivators.

🌱 Key Highlights of the Sugarcane Development Drive

  • 243 superior sugarcane varieties developed over the past decade
  • Includes 28 early-maturing and 31 mid-to-late maturing types
  • Varieties are climate-resilient, disease-resistant, and high-yielding
  • 267-hectare breeder seed nursery established to supply certified, disease-free seeds

According to officials, these new varieties have significantly reduced crop damage, lowered input costs, and increased profit margins for farmers. The Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Research Council has played a pivotal role in this transformation, tailoring varieties to suit diverse agro-climatic zones across the state.

🧑‍🌾 Empowering Farmers Through Innovation

The government is also strengthening sugarcane committees to provide farmers with technical support, training, and timely access to seeds and fertilizers. These efforts are complemented by reforms in cooperative societies, ensuring transparent payments and better service delivery.

“This is a game-changer for sugarcane farmers. The new varieties are not only more productive but also more resilient to pests and climate stress,” said an official from the Sugarcane Development Department.

📈 Impact on Rural Economy

With sugarcane being a key cash crop in Uttar Pradesh, the initiative is expected to boost rural livelihoods, enhance food security, and contribute to the state’s agricultural GDP. Farmers across Western, Central, and Eastern UP are already reporting higher yields and better returns.
